Railroad View:  Good View.  Railroad is about 600 feet from hotel, and down a small hill.  Rooms on the front (west side) on 2nd or 3rd floor are needed to view the trains.  1st floor rooms will not have a view due to the need to look down the hill to see the tracks, the parking lot may also be an issue. Rooms on the rear of the building may also have a view, but you would really need to stretch your head to get a glips of a passing train. The small Glenwood Springs yard is across from the hotel.  Union Pacific sometimes parks locomotives in the yard.  A snowplow is also stationed in the yard.  At night, its too dark to make out a passing train.

Railroads past Hotel:  Union Pacific / BNSF / Amtrak.  - Don't let the long list of railroads fool you; there are usually about 12 trains during a 24-hour period on this line.

Notes:  This is a brand new motel.  Its about 100 feet closer to the tracks then the Residence Inn located next door.  This Courtyard will provide a better view of the railroad between the two hotels.  This hotel is within walking distance of a modern exterior corridor shopping center with Target being an anchor store.

Photo Comment:  (Left photo): As
viewed from the north side of the Colorado River, an eastbound Union Pacific is about to pass the Courtyard Hotel. (Right Photo): Union Pacific engines parked in the yard can be seen from the hotels parking lot.

About Hotel: 3-Stories, Interior Corridors, An Historic Hotel, High-speed wireless Internet, Off-street parking, Coffee pot, iron and board, hairdryer.

Railroad View:  Semi-Fair view from the 3rd floor rooms.  2nd floor rooms may have a slight view when the trees are bare.  Several trees and the train station building across the street limit the view.  At night, there is enough light to see the trains.

Railroads past Hotel:  Union Pacific / BNSF / Amtrak.  - Don't let the long list of railroads fool you; there are usually about 12 trains during a 24-hour period on this line.  Amtrak's California Zephyr (#5 + #6) stops daily across the street.  There is a small railroad museum inside the train station.  There are several spots within walking distance of the hotel to capture nice pictures of the railroad action.  Eastbound trains blow their horn for a crossing about 2-minutes west of the hotel.  If you know a train is close you can walk across the street and get a good view of it.

Notes:  Expect rooms on the 3rd floor to be special rooms, costing more then what is posted above.  No automobile is needed if arriving by train, there are plenty of places to walk to.

Comments:  This is a very well kept first class historic hotel.

Photo Comment:  Hotel Denver is seen behind the train station and Amtrak # 6 which is seen making a station stop at Glenwood Springs.  These pictures were taken from a pedestrian bridge that crosses the Colorado River & the railroad.

Railroad View:  Excellent View.  A room on the rear (South side) of the motel is needed for a railroad (River) view.  Motel is built next to the Colorado River; on the south side of the river are the railroad tracks.  There are a few trees behind the motel but they don't affect the view.  I had the largest of the trees outside my window and I was still able to see around it.  The windows do open, with a screen.  Besides the view from the window, there is a paved walkway located behind the motel that parallels the river.  For photographs, that is the place to be.  It’s easy to walk out on the rocks along the edge of the river to capture that great shot!  There is also a patio behind the motel where you can sit and relax...and watch the trains.  At night, the railroad is very dark, you can hardly make out passing trains, but hearing them is not a problem.

Railroads past Hotel:  Union Pacific / BNSF / Amtrak.  - Don't let the long list of railroads fool you; there are usually about 12 trains during a 24-hour period on this line.  I only saw 5 during my 16 hour stay, and I didn't miss any!  The trains are loud; the sound echo’s in the canyon which is a surreal noise if you never head a train travel through a canyon before.  Radio frequencies used: 160.920 + 160.455.

Notes:  I was in room # 321, the largest tree behind the building is just outside the window, but it didn't bother me, plenty of room to look around it.  Two miles east on I-70 is downtown Glenwood Springs, a very nice town which includes an Am trak station.  Amtrak # 5 + 6, California Zephyr serves Glenwood Springs.

Comments:

Photo Comment:  A Westbound BNSF train uses trackage rights on this UP owned track.  The Colorado River is seen below the train.  As you can see the train in this photo is slightly blurred, it’s about 6:00am; the light wasn't strong enough to speed up my camera shutter speed which was set on automatic.  This was the only train that I photographed during daylight from this motel.  (Left Photo): This view from the window shows the walkway, river and railroad.  It’s a very peaceful setting!

Comments:

Photo Comment:  An eastbound Union Pacific train passes the Residence Inn (building in picture).  Note the hill in front of the motel is about 300 feet from the building itself, which blocks the railroad view from the 1st & 2nd floors.  The Colorado River can also be seen in the foreground.
