Railroad View: Excellent View. Railroad is elevated; rooms on south side will be needed for a good view. North side rooms will be blocked by the railroad station, and the I-84 overpass. Hartford train station is located next to the motel. You can see trains at night, it will likely be too dark to video them.
Railroads past Hotel: Amtrak / Connecticut Southern. You can not hear the trains from the motel. The best way to catch the passing trains is to know the passenger schedule. During my winter visit, all trains were about 10-15 minutes late. Trains do not blow their horn in this area, there are no grade crossings nearby.
Comments: For those railfans in the NY City area, This hotel is a short train ride from New York City. Walk across the street to the hotel. The hotel offers free breakfast and there are plenty of local restaurants to grab lunch / dinner. The hotel is less then an hour away from railfan hotspot in Palmer, Mass.
Photo Comment: A southbound Amtrak train makes a stop at Amtraks Hartford station. The train is seen stopped on the Asylum Street overpass. All rooms on the south side should offer the same view. Below Right photo looks south; motel is seen at the left. Below Left photo shows the south side (front) of the HI Express Motel with Hartford train station to the left. There is only one active track through the once busy Hartford station. Today about 12 Amtrak trains and a few freight trains pass through the station over a 24-hour period. Most trains pass during daylight hours. I am unsure if there are any deadheads or extra moves on this line. This is a mainline between Springfield, MA and New Haven, CT.
Walking distance to Amtrak's HARTFORD, CT Station.
