HAMMOND, INDIANA --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hammond, IN - Fairfield Inn & Suites Chicago Southeast/Hammond

Address:   7720 Corinne Drive                  Phone: 219-845-6950

Location/ Directions:  I-80/94 East. Exit at Kennedy Avenue South. Turn right at first stop light, which is Corinne Drive.

Average Price (Checked Feb 2012):   $110.00                                 AAA Rated:  YES        Stars: **2**

About Hotel: 4-Floors, 94-Rooms, Interior Corridors, Free Breakfast, High-Speed Internet, Complimentary on-site parking, Pets not allowed, 100% Smoke Free Motel, Business center, Fitness center, Air conditioning, Alarm clock, Coffee maker/tea service, Crib, Individual climate control, Iron and ironing board, Mini fridge in some rooms, Roll-away bed, Hair dryer, Color Cable/satellite TV with HBO, Concierge desk, Indoor Pool, Whirlpool.

Railroad View:  Excellent View!  Any room on the rear of the motel will offer a railroad view.  All odd number rooms face the tracks.  Floors 2-4 will offer a excellent railroad view.  First floor rooms will also offer a railroad view; but a wooden fence behind the motel will block the lower portion of passing trains.  Trains are not easy to view at night.  Windows open about 6" without screen which makes photography / video possible.

Railroads past Hotel:  Indiana Harbor Belt and Norfolk Southern Railway. Ownership changes right near the hotel.  North of hotel is the IHB 'Kankakee Line'.
It goes from CP 502 on NS' Chicago Line to Gibson Jct, which is actually just north of the hotel.  South of hotel is NS 'Kankakee Belt Route'; Which was a branch of the New York Central's Illinois Division "Egyptian Line" from South Bend to Zearing, IL. The eastern and western parts are abandoned. So trains now come up that branch (now mainline) past the hotel.  The line sees 8 to 10 trains from BNSF interchanged at Streator, IL. It's considered a "Chicago By-Pass." [Info by TJC].  A signal mast outside the motel is signal number "26262", no decimal point painted on sign.

Notes:     During my 17 hour stay only one train passed the motel, at 10:55pm.  The empty NORX hopper train was powered by a couple of Union Pacific locomotives.  The northbound train stopped while passing, likely to get permission on the IHB.

Comments:    This is the closest railfan motel to Chicago area hot spots of Dolton / Blue Island, IL, both just minutes away.  There is a Wendy's / Cracker Barrel Restaurant nearby, both within walking distance.

Photo Comment:  Upper Left Photo:  A view looking west from room # 209 shows the clear view from the motel room.  Late day sun light is not the best for pictures from the motel.  Upper Right Photo:  A night photo taken of the only train that past during my stay.  The NORX empty hopper train took a brief pause, likely to get permission on the IHB Railroad who's property line is located just north of the motel.  Below Right Photo: The aerial picture shows an empty NS hopper train passing the Fairfield Inn motel.  This photo looks east at the rear of the motel.  Interstate 80/94 can be seen to the left side of the picture.  This motel is a good option for railfans watching trains in the southern and eastern side of Chicago.   Lower Left Photo:  A morning view looking southwest from room # 209, morning pictures are great of the odd numbered rooms!

Railroad View:  Fair to Poor View, depending on the season you visit.  When tree's are in bloom, the view maybe very slim.  Ask for a room on the rear of the motel, overlooking the pond.  The railroad is located across the pond.  There are tree's located between the pond and the railroad which may foul much of the view in warmer weather months.

Photo Comment:  The aerial photo shows the Residence Inn to the far right, the railroad with an empty coal train can be seen to the left side of the picture.  You need a room facing the water in order to have a railroad view.

We recommend staying at the Fairfield Inn (just out of view to the top of this picture), that motel has an excellent railroad view, and is next door!
