Comments: Hotel is located next to the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Photo Comment:  Amtrak's Springfield line which passes the hotel runs from Springfield down to New Haven, CT.  Most passenger trains are short shuttle trains which operate between the two cities.  Amtrak's Vermonter is the only sizable passenger train on this line.  Freight train's of the Connecticut Southern RR also use this line, although the CSOR is a short line railroad, trains can be sizeable, and can be found powered by GE B39-8 locomotives.

Railroad View:  Very Good for Amtrak's Springfield Line.  The view of CSX's Boston Line is poor due to the distance, and the old steel bridge that CSX uses cripples most of the vision from the hotel.  Those trains can only be seen as they cross the bridge.  Train's are quiet as they pass, an eye out the window is needed to catch passing train's.  You will need a high floor on the west side of the building to have a good view of the railroad action.

Railroads past Hotel:   Amtrak / Connecticut Southern / CSX (in distance).  The Springfield Line only sees about 12 passenger trains a day, along with a hand full of freights.  Most trains pass during daylight hours.  The CSX Boston Line (which is seen in the distance crossing the Connecticut River) hosts about 20 trains over a 24-hour period.

Comments: Although I have not stayed in the Sheraton, I did stay next door in the Marriott.  I recommend the Sheraton since it’s closer to the railroad tracks, and has a better view.  It was also $30.00 less in November 2010 then the Marriott.

Photo Comment:  Right Photo: The Sheraton is the building in the top right part of the photo.  The railroad is seen under Memorial Bridge.  Left Photo: The Sheraton Hotel is marked in the yellow circle; the white circle marks the CSX rail line.  The CSX line is the busier of the two, though getting a good look at the CSX freights is difficult from the hotel.

Notes:

Comments: I last stayed in this hotel in the late 1990's, I arrived late and departed around 9am, and so I didn't have too much time to really watch the railroad scene.  In the 1990's, the Springfield Amtrak station was the place to go to watch train's in the area.  I'm not sure if that's still the case with Amtrak's current security policy.

Photo Comment:  Marriott is the light colored building in the top right of the photo.  The railroad tracks can be seen under the bridge.  When this photo was taken Amtrak still had mail business, the railcars in the photo are Amtrak's Express Boxcars which were loaded and unloaded at this location.  Out of view to the left side of this photo is CSX's Boston Line (former Boston & Albany RR) which crosses the Connecticut River.  View of the CSX line is poor, too far to read engine numbers, binoculars may help.  The view of Amtrak's Springfield Line out the window is very good.  Rooms on the west side of the hotel are needed for a good view.
