Railroad View: Very Good. A spread apart tree line gives most rooms some sought of view. The tracks are only about 70-feet from the motel itself. Train traffic is light, maybe only 10 trains during a 24-hour period. Overnight trains do NOT blow their horns, daytime they do. Train's roll past slow, maybe 20 mph the max. Although they do not blow their horn, they will wake you up at night. In my experiences, they pass by 2 or 3 times during the night.
Railroad past Hotel: Union Pacific (former Chicago & North Western Spine Line) / Progressive Rail (former SOO Line branch line)
Notes: Northfiled is located south of St. Paul, MN, its a small town with a busy Malt-O-Meal plant.
Comments: I've stayed here 4 times, all 4 times SOO Line hosted cabooses on their local trains. I haven't stayed here since Progressive Rail took over the service.
Picture Comments: This picture was taken from a room on the second floor. This is a single track well maintained line. Although it looks like the train is cutting across the motel's back lawn, there is actually nicely formed ballast bed behind the grass line. Looks can be deceiving! Out of view to the right is the unrestored Northfiled train station. UP use to use it as an MofW office - even with it boarded up! Not sure if that is still the case. That station is about 30 foot steps to the right.
