Hotel renovations splashing along

Construction is splashing along at the Rochester City Centre Hotel in the Med City's downtown.  Its courtyard area is roped off as construction crews work to re-create the hotel's former pool area.

Mike Bhatka, who owns the 170-room, is doing major renovations to convert it into a full-service Holiday Inn hotel.  Remember, this is the latest twist in the hotel's string of recent changes.  In December, Bhatka opted to not make make renovations to bring the then-Holiday Inn Express up to upgraded corporate standards.

The Holiday Inn Express signs came down and the hotel became a independent. Under the Rochester City Centre name, the hotel's occupancy has dropped and staffing has been reduced, including cutting the general manager position.

Now InterContinental Hotel Group, the corporate parent of the Holiday Inn brands, has agreed to bring its name back to downtown Rochester, says Sherry Telford of IHG. But to get the name, the hotel must bring back the amenities needed to be a full-service Holiday Inn versus an "Express" property.

"We have to renovate the pool, restaurant and bar as well as upgrade the rooms some," said Bhatka. "We will have to spend some money to do it."

He hopes to make those changes in the next "two to three months."

Those features were shut down in 2005, when it was changed into a Holiday Inn Express by the hotel's former owner, Sunstone Properties Inc. Bhatka took control of the hotel in 2006.

Photo Comment:  The aerial photo shows the Rochester City Center Hotel (tall building), and the railroad passing over a bridge.  Even lower floor rooms should have a view if you look off to the right.
