Railroad View:  Excellent.  Hotel overlooks the St. Louis Freight Yard located on the south end of historic Union Station. The St. Louis Amtrak station is also across the street as well as a station for the Metro Link light rail system.  Request a room on an upper floor on the south side of the building.  Note; Only single bed rooms are located on the south side, rooms with two beds are on the east & west side of the building, however you can get a double (2 beds) room on the south end of the east or west side and have a nice railroad view.  Upper floors are needed to be above Interstate-64 that runs elevated between the hotel & the train yard.

Railroad past Hotel:  Union Pacific, BNSF Railway, Alton & Southern Railroad, Amtrak, and Metro Link light rail system.  Its a busy train yard, not much time between trains.

Notes:  The Transportation Terminal (Amtrak,  Merto Link light rail, and Greyhound) is across the street.  This hotel is in the middle of the city, everything is reachable without an automobile.  The historic Union Station (shopping mall) is a few blocks west of the hotel.  From the front entrance, you can walk across a bridge over the train yard (sidewalks on both side of the bridge). Nice place to take pictures, the hotel itself makes a nice backdrop. As with any big city be careful of your surroundings.  Although my visit in 2009 was pleasant, I remember 25 years ago this was not the area to be walking around with a camera by yourself on a bridge over the train yard.

Comments: If visiting the area, be sure to visit the Museum of Transportation located about 20-minutes west of the hotel.  There is a lot of locomotives & rolling stock displayed; a double track Union Pacific (and Amtrak) line passes the museum.  A nice place to spend the afternoon.

Picture Comments:  Photo's from the hotel room.  Center photo shows the view from a room on the east/south side (view looks southeast).  West side room will overlook the Amtrak station area.  With a pair of binoculars, you can watch trains coming across the Mississippi River railroad bridge from Illinois, you can also see trains approaching from the south and north, several minutes before they arrive the yard.  Speed limit in the yard is likely 10-mph, all train's that I saw didn't move any quicker.  Left photo: The westbound Amtrak train is the Texas Eagle arriving the station.  Photos & videos can be captured from the hotel room window with little effort.

Photo Comment: A set of TRRA light power moves across the TRRA High Line's North Leg which passes in front the Arch to TRRA's Bermen Yard.  Trains on this trackage will stay on the west side of the Mississippi River.  Beyond the location where the locomotives are is the busier elevated rail line which crosses the MacArthur Bridge (bridge out of view to the left).  You will notice two spans; the first one which is slightly lower is the rail line which leads onto the lower level of the bridge.  The second span above that is the former highway that once traveled across the upper level of the bridge.  The 1917 bridge was closed to highway traffic in 1981, and today only railroads use the bridge.  The photo looks south from a south side room of the Hilton. Railroad View:  Expect an Excellent View!  High floor rooms on the west / south side of hotel (overlooking large hotel parking lot) will offer a clear view of the Metrolink yard & shop, and a distant view of the railroads.

Railroads past Hotel: Metrolink (light rail, yard & shop) / Union Pacific / BNSF Railway / Amtrak.  UP / BNSF / Amtrak share tracks in St. Louis.  The Metrolink yard & shop is next to hotel, the railroad tracks of UP / BNSF /Amtrak are located behind the Metrolink facility.  The South Jefferson Avenue bridge passes over all the rail lines.  There is sidewalks and bicycle paths on both sides of the bridge.  This area of St. Louis has been cleaned-up quite a bit.  As recent as 10+ years ago, I would not recommend walking alone in this area with a camera.  That may have changed for the better.  Still, I would ask the hotel staff about area safety before wondering too far from the hotel grounds; as with any major city, use caution and don't railfan alone.

Photo Comment: The aerial photo shows the Residence Inn outlined with yellow (top left).  Across the street from the motel is the Metrolink yard & shop.  The actual railroad lines are seen to the right side of the picture.  This location is just west of Union Station and Union Pacific's 23rd Street Yard.  Binoculars and zoom lens will be needed for good views of the railroad trains (UP/BNSF/Amtrak).

Photo Comment: The aerial picture shows the Four Seasons Hotel to the lower left side of the photo (green glass building).  The single track railroad is seen near the right side of the photo.  This single track is the closest track to the hotel, but is not the only line you will see from the rooms.  Across the river, another very active TRRA line runs along the river on the Illinois side.  With rooms on the Arch side of the hotel you will be able achieve a distant from of the busy MacArthur Bridge (TRRA ownership, and used move trains across the river).

Picture Comments:  Looking south down the Sulphur Avenue extension.  Photo is taken next to the Union Pacific line, look hard for the crossing gates of the BNSF Railway just down the street.  The Holiday Inn is located up on the hill.  Its located next to Exit # 286 of I-44.
