Railroad View: Poor when trees are in bloom, otherwise a fair view. (I've only stayed here during the summer).
Railroads past Hotel: Norfolk Southern. Less than 10 trains pass the motel during a 24-hour period.
Notes: Train's are loud when they pass; they usually wake me up (no horn, just the rumble from the engines). I stayed here several times because it’s easily accessible from I-40. Sometimes I am able to make out engine numbers of the passing trains, but they sneak up - no advance warning that they are approaching. No time to grab a camera - not that I'd get any kind of picture of it anyway.
Picture Comments: Left: The trains pass in what looks to be a small opening in the trees. Past years (maybe another room), I was able to see the trains enough to get engine numbers, not this year. I imagine during winter time the view would be better.
Right: Aerial view of the Days Inn shows the single track main. There is a Motel 6 across the road (out of view to the left), it’s also along the tracks, trees & brush also block that view.

Comments: This motel has not been rated by RailfanMotels.comPhoto Comment: Located in the center of town. The Grand Bohemian Hotel is circled in yellow. The double track railroad is seen to the right side of the photo.

Railroad View: Expect a Fair Railroad View from rooms on the east side of the motel. You can't see train's from the window, you need to step outside on the exterior corridors and look to the right. The railroad is across the street. The view looks at the railroad grade crossing.
Railroads past Hotel:
Comments: This motel has not been rated by RailfanMotels.comPhoto Comment: The aerial photo shows the Ramada circled in yellow, railroad is marked with red. The blue lines show the clear view of the railroad, the green lines mark a possible view, although I expect tree's may foul much of this wide view. This photo faces southward, rooms on the east side, closer to the front should be the best choice for train watching.
Asheville, NC - Sleep Inn West
Address: 1918 Old Haywood Rd Phone: (828) 670-7600
Location/ Directions: I-40 Exit 44 Turn Left onto Smoky Park Highway (US 19/23). Take left at light (BP Station) onto Old Haywood Rd. Sleep Inn is on right at top of Hill.
Average Price (Checked Aug 2012): $79.00 AAA Rated: YES Stars: **2**
About Hotel: 3-Floors, 74-Rooms, Interior Corridors, Free Hot Breakfast, Free local calls, Free wireless high-speed Internet access, Fitness center, Elevator, Bus Parking, Business Center, Fitness Center, Free Coffee, Free Newspaper Mon-Fri, Guest Laundry, No Pets Allowed, Outdoor Parking, Cable/Satellite TV, In-Room Air Conditioning, In-Room Coffee Maker, Iron & Ironing Board.
Railroad View: Good Distant View. You need a high floor room on the rear of the motel to have a railroad view. The railroad is down the hill across US-23, the railroad will be seen best at the grade crossing. A zoom lens is best for photography of passing trains. Video from the motel will turn out good. There is enough light at night to watch & video trains. The two trains that passed during my visit passed after midnight.
Railroads past Hotel: Blue Ridge Southern (shortline railroad started 2014, owned by WATCO). Former Norfolk Southern branch line. Expect no more than 2-4 trains past the motel during a 24-hour period.
Notes: Plenty of restaurants are nearby; Cracker Barrel, Waffle House, Wendy's, Applebee's, Subway, and Dunkin Donuts are very close, there are many others a short drive away.
Comments:Photo Comment: The aerial picture shows the Sleep Inn circled in yellow. The railroad is marked in red. The motel is located up on a hill. Higher floor rooms in the motel are needed for a railroad view due to some trees and brush located behind the building. The railroad is not a very busy line. During my 15 hour stay, two trains passed over night (12:25am & 2:30am).
