CLOVIS, NEW MEXICO ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Clovis, NM - Best Western Clovis Inn & Suites

Address:  2912 Mabry Drive                                     Phone: 575-762-5600

Location/ Directions: 1.8 miles East on US 60/70/84.

Average Price (Checked Aug 2010):   $72.00                                AAA Rated:    YES      Stars: ***3***

About Hotel: 2-Stories, 96-Rooms, Exterior Corridors, No Elevator, High Speed internet, Phone & voicemail, Iron, Hair dryer, Heated outdoor pool, Whirlpool, Exercise room, Coin laundry.

Railroad View:  Fair. Trees along the tracks prevent a clear view, but this motel & Howard Johnsons next door have the better railroad view compared to the other motels near the tracks in Clovis.  No rooms face tracks directly; you have to look at an angle out your window. Exterior corridors make it easier to step out the door to take a picture or video.  2nd floor rooms are preferred.  1st floor rooms have the parking lot and trucks on Route 60 (Mabry Drive) to contend with.  Also a stairway shaft in the center of the building will block views from several rooms near the stairway area.   BNSF Railway has very bright lighting along their mainline in Clovis.  It’s actually easier to see the trains at night then it is to see traffic driving past on US 60.  Room windows do open with a screen.  Trains are loud as they pass the motel, no horns, but the engine sound is escalated maybe due to the echo off the motel walls.

Railroads past Hotel:  BNSF Railway / Amtrak.  The BNSF TransCon Mainline hosts 65+ trains during a 24-hour period.

Notes:  This Best Western is one of the nicest motels in Clovis.  Only a brand new Comfort Inn behind this motel & a Hampton Inn down the street are nicer, but neither have a railroad view.

Comments:  I was unable to get a room near the railroad.  The first room I had was behind the stairway structure (room # 208) with no view at all.  The only other room on the second floor that was available a smoking room located way in the back of the building (second to last room, room# 243).  The room was too far away from the railroad to enjoy watching trains. The smoking room I was in was unbearable; it smelled like a cigarette was still burning!

Photo Comments:  (Left photo): Standing near the stairway shaft, an intermodal train passes the motel.  (Center photo): At night, thanks to lighting that BNSF Railway installed to illuminate their railroad, train watching in Clovis at night lives!  (Right photo): Daylight view as seen from the exterior corridor on the second floor.

Comments:

Photo Comments:  A BNSF freight passes the motel with auto-rack cars in tow.  Picture is taken outside room # 258, the second floor on the east side.  The east side is the best area of this motel to see the railroad.

Comments:  Due to poor guest comments on the internet, I chose to stay next door at Best Western.  I wasn't completely happy with the BW, next visit to Clovis; I will plan on staying here at HoJo's.

Notes:  I didn't stay in this motel.  This motel is not well kept.  We do not recommend this motel.  You get what you pay for, sometimes less.  It was once a Motel 6, which has gone downhill.  Motel is only listed due to its location & view of the railroad, and to warn you not to be fooled when looking for a nice, inexpensive motel in Clovis.   Please note; the owner of this motel advertises it on the internet using photos of nicer motels.  Reviews from guests on internet are poor.

Photo Comments:  (Right photo): This photo was taken from outside room # 201.  The railroad view from this motel isn't bad; it’s one of the better views from a motel in Clovis.  (Left photo): As seen from the parking lot, an eastbound BNSF train zooms past Motel 7.  Sign near the road advertises $29.95 per night.
