Railroad View: Excellent View. Ask for a room on the railroad side (north side), second floor will put you above the parking lot in case high profile vehicles park in the lot.
Railroads past Hotel: Norfolk Southern / Amtrak. Motel is located near Milepost 297 (MP 297). A grade crossing west of the motel alerts you to eastbound trains. A radio scanner will help alert you to westbounds. Trains call signals at MP 295, and MP 299. The rail line is very busy, it’s the former Conrail Chicago Line (now Norfolk Southern) and hosts upward of 50 trains during a 24-hour period. Trains pass quickly, and do not make much noise. You will not get woken up by them, but you can tell they are passing! The motel is located on the south side of the railroad. You can actually capture really nice pictures of passing trains from the edge of the parking lot.
Railroad Radio Frequency: 161.070 - NS Toledo West Train Dispatcher.
Notes: My visit during Dec 2011; I found the same railroad view as my prior visit. No additional tree's or other obstructions to alter the view.
Photo Comments: Left photo: Using a 55mm lens, an eastbound Norfolk Southern train is seen from a room on the second floor. Right photo: Using a wide angle lens, a Auto-Rack train passes the motel. The exterior corridors are useful for pictures. A radio scanner will help you know when trains are close, thanks to hotbox detectors located on each side of the motel. The Toledo yardmaster speaks to many of the trains, which also helps you know when they are coming.
