Railroad View: Excellent View! Rooms on the 2nd & 3rd floor on the back of the building are needed for a railroad view. Room #'s 214-220 and 314-320 (even numbers only) offer the best railroad views. There are less trees in front of these rooms. 3rd Floor rooms are smoking rooms, but 2nd floor rooms provide the same excellent view. Night-time train watching is possible, although video is poor, there is enough light to read the engine numbers. 1st floor rooms are really "basement rooms", first floor room windows look out into the grills of cars parked in the motels parking lot.
Railroads past Hotel: Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad / Bessemer & Lake Erie (CN) / AK Steel (Private steel railroad, switching). The B&PRR is the closest track to the motel, trains pass the motel slowly, usually no more then 15mph. The B&LE and AK Steel is just across the creek. The windows in the motel do open (protected by a screen), so its easy to hear approaching trains. Trains do not blow their horn (no grade crossing nearby), but you will hear them pass during the night (even with the windows closed), they are very close to the motel. I stayed here during Memorial Day weekend (Sun-Mon), I didn't expect to see anything moving. During my 13-hour stay, I saw 5 B&PRR trains, and 2 AK Steel switching moves. I didn't catch any B&LE trains. Its funny, the Canadian owned RR seamed to be shut down for the holiday, while the American owned RR / steel mill were busy on Memorial Day.
Notes: There is a Pizza Hut and Burger King next door to the motel. If your equipped with a radio-scanner, B&PRR was using 160.785 (New Castle - Big Run), and 160.530 (Yard) during my stay.
Comments: During my stay, the motel's Wi-Fi internet didn't work very well. I kept getting switched to the Internet providers home page.
Photo Comment: The night photo show the railroad view at night. There was no train passing during the shot, I took it so you can see how much light is available for night-time train watching. Center Right: Some covered hoppers were captured by my camera as a northbound B&PRR train slowly passes the motel just before 8am. This picture shows the extent of the railroad view from this motel, to the left are solid trees along the tracks with no view at all. The building in the distance is part of AK Steel. B&LE trains would pass between the steel mill and the B&P train, it would be a clear view...had I've seen any B&LE trains on this holiday weekend.
Lower Left: Engine B-86, an SW-1001 operated by AK Steel runs through the yard to pick-up a few cars. Picture taken from the motel room window with a zoom lens.
Lower Right: SD40-2 # QGRY 6062 is the trailing power on a northbound B&P train seen from my room # 216 window. Really nice train pictures can be taken if you happen to be in the parking lot while a train is passing. Sun light is best during AM hours at this motel.
