Railroad View: Poor in summer (due to trees), Fair otherwise... unless railcars are stored on a siding next to hotel. There is no noise from the railroad at all.
Railroads past Hotel: CSX
Notes: [My visit took place while this hotel was operating as a Ramada, in 2010]
Comments: It took a couple tries for the front desk to find me a room near the railroad, after they put me on the wrong end of the building twice, I settled for a middle room on the fourth floor (I reserved a high floor on the railroad side of the building). I had a room on the west side of the building, it didn't have too much of a view. I don't blame it on the staff, or the trees. The major obstruction was the stored empty hopper train parked along the mainline, with rusted wheels! There was no way to see any trains at all. Had the train not have been there, it is possible to get a semi-fair view - even with the trees in bloom. The hotel is within walking distance of CSX's South Charleston Yard. I stayed here during a holiday weekend, not many trains were working anyhow.
Photo Comments: This was my view from the hotel window. The railroad tracks are out of view to the left (by the tree line). Behind the trees were stored CSX hopper cars (with rusted wheels, so they haven't moved in a while). In the distance it’s possible to see the trains from this room. There is space between some trees; if I had a room closer to the railroad I would have had a better view. The hotel across the way is the Wingate Inn; I believe a room on the west side of the Wingate is the place to be for a clear railroad view. There are no trees on the west side of Wingate, and the yard lead starts in that area (meaning no stored rail cars).

Comments: I stayed at the Ramada next door in 2009; a stored hopper train was parked on the north track blocking view of the main tracks. The end of the line of stored cars ended on the east side of Wingate. Ramada also had more trees in the line of sight. During my visit, I said the next time I'll try the Wingate. CSX South Charleston Yard is just west of the motel, within walking distance. It’s safe to walk on the small road behind the motel to take pictures/videos of the passing trains.
Photo Comments: This aerial view looks south. My stay next door at the Ramada in 2009 resulted in stored rail cars blocking my view. It was also a year of many railroads storing cars across the country. I look forward to staying at the Wingate soon, a review will follow.
